Job description
This is a unique opportunity for anyone interested in working at the very heart of Government and providing a vital link between the Prime Minister and the outside world while sampling the breadth of policies across departments. No.10 is a friendly and fascinating place to be, and the role provides an opportunity to see how it works and interacts with other parts of Government. You will be playing an important role in the way that the Prime Minister and Government are viewed externally and keeping the public informed.
The role requires good communication skills and the ability to build relationships (both with other teams within No.10 and with colleagues across Government whose advice and input is often required). You will need to be proactive in your approach to work, have an eye for detail, be able to work within hard deadlines, and contribute to the smooth running of the Direct Communications Unit. We are a diverse and welcoming team, and we strongly support apprenticeship schemes and personal development.
Person specification
In particular, in this role you will have the opportunity to:
- Manage a small team of correspondence officers;
- Identify trends and anticipate problems in order to prioritise work and provide a high quality service;
- Motivate and assist colleagues to reach their potential;
- Promote a collaborative working atmosphere;
- Gain experience of working in the heart of, and across, Government within a friendly and supportive environment.
You will need – or demonstrate the potential – to:
- Read and absorb information and be confident in your decisions on how it should be treated;
- Be able to draft – or commission – high quality, relevant replies that present Government policy in the best light;
- Have a bigger picture approach, utilising project management skills and awareness of current affairs to manage and prioritise your case load;
- Work with other Government Departments to secure their cooperation, build rapport, share best practice and foster a consistent approach to correspondence.
A good working knowledge of MS Office systems (Word, Outlook, Excel) would be helpful, as would an interest in current affairs.
You will be expected to have or develop a high standard of written English and reading comprehension, including grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Behaviours
We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:
- Communicating and Influencing
- Delivering at Pace
- Managing a Quality Service
- Working Together
Benefits
- Learning and development tailored to your role.
- An environment with flexible working options.
- A culture encouraging inclusion and diversity.
- A Civil Service Pension which provides an attractive pension, benefits for dependants and average employer contributions of 27%.
- A minimum of 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing by one day per year up to a maximum of 30.
